Introduction

This course will take you through an introduction to risk assessments and their importance for any location-based project.

The Tower Bridge riverside will serve as a real-world scenario allowing attendees to dynamically assess risks on the ground. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing.

This course can be adapted to suit other location based media activities including, podcasts, interviews, or research trips.


DAY ONE – INTRO AND LOCATION SCOUT


What is a Risk Assessment?

  • The basics of a risk assessment and the importance of working safely
  • Example risk assessments from large-scale film operations to smaller-scale interview setups
  • The key reasons risk assessments are important (safety, duty of care, insurance)
  • Understanding risk assessments as an evaluation tool, not a guarantee of safety


The Hazard Table

  • Understanding the hazard table and how to apply it
  • Evaluating complex risks and the role of specialist assessments (e.g. rope access/scuba diving)
  • Practical exercise: Applying the hazard table to a given scenario
  • Group discussion on identified/missed hazards


Location recce

On-site risk evaluation of the Thames foreshore/riverbank, (weather permitting - attendees should wear sturdy footwear/warm clothing)

  • Note-taking methods and signs to look out for
  • The importance of taking photos
  • The value of attaching geotags and notes to your location images



DAY TWO – CREATION OF RISK ASSESSMENT DOCUMENT


Creating a template

  • Creating a document/template in line with industry standards (BBC example)
  • Adding key details: Contacts, GPS coordinates, project overview, and emergency info


The Hazard Table

  • Identifying risks and countermeasures based on the recce
  • Group discussion on which risks have been identified and which haven’t
  • Are the countermeasures appropriate?
  • What to do if you have an incident on location


Circulation

  • Best practices for sharing and storing risk assessments
  • Privacy, and how to handle sensitive information about team members that is covered in an assessment
  • The importance of sharing risk assessments with your insurance provider


Finalising and polishing your Risk Assessment

  • Final checks based on group discussion
  • Save and log your assessment
